Ariadna Gil, who rarely works in theatre, and Abel Folk star in this adaptation of this extremely famous novel by Charlotte Brontë directed by Carme Portaceli, for which they both received the 2017 “Butaca Award” for best performance. The story of Jane Eyre, involving autobiographic elements, is very well-known: it is a classic love story, a precursor of feminism and modern psychology, about an orphan girl who confronts her manifest destiny thanks to her unwavering intelligence and integrity. Difficult loves in troubled times. Controversial and revolutionary at the time of its publication, Jane Eyre is, simultaneously, a cutting critique of a rancid society (and its classicism) and a feisty hymn to bravery and romance. According to Carme Portaceli, the character created by Brontë “carries within her the most impressive instinct to overcome that I have ever read”. The Valencian director avails of all this in the work premiered at the Teatre Lliure de Gràcia to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of the English writer and it has live music to accompany such a charismatic, wise, passionate and brave character.
“Ariadna Gil, with a fantastic voice and gestures, really makes the role her own from the start and embodies it with constant conviction and authority.” [El País newspaper]
