The Teatre Principal faces a huge technical and artistic challenge with Der Fliegende Holländer, putting a work by Wagner on stage for the first time within the Opera Season.
Der fliegende Holländer is one of the greatest titles by Richard Wagner, who was also in charge of the libretto for this work. Composed between 1840 and 1841, this opera is considered to be a turning point in Wagner’s career, representing the beginning of his creative maturity and his transition towards more philosophical and poetical topics about opera.
It tells the story of a blasphemous man who is damned to ramble the oceans eternally, only stopping inland once every seven years in order to look for a lover to redeem him and thus to free him from this curse.
It premiered on January 2nd 1843 in the Königlich Sächsisches Hoftheater of Dresden. During the 2001 Opera Season, a concert version of this work took place in the Auditorium de Palma as the Teatre Principal was closed for remodeling.
Produced by Teatro Municipal de Santiago de Chile.
