Charles Gounod (1818-1893) is well-known for operas such as Faust or Roméo et Juliette, a work we had the pleasure to enjoy on May 2024 in the Teatre Principal. His compositions of sacred music may not be as famous as his lyrical works, but they possess the same quality and the same choral and symphonic richness indeed.
La Messe Solennelle de Sainte Cécile was premiered in the church of Saint-Eustache in Paris on November the 22nd 1885, on Saint Cecily’s day, and caused “surprise and enthusiasm” in words of Saint-Saëns. In fact, this work was published several times and was performed on the stages of the main cities of Europe, making his popularity to increase rapidly.
