Mar de fons is set in the summer of 1936, when Republican troops disembarked on the east coast of Mallorca to recover the island, which had taken the side of the military uprising. The operation ended in failure and, three weeks later, the Republicans had to re-embark. During their sudden and badly organised escape, soldiers were left behind, who were then tortured and shot. Like the groundswell -the collection of waves reaching the coast, produced by a recent storm in the sea- the remainder of summer 1936 shook Mallorcan society, leaving consequences that can still be felt 80 years later. The whole thing explains our modern-day society and gives us a glimpse of the society we could have been, but will never be... Mar de fons is based on the true stories of people involved in the events, both the armed conflict of 1936 and the long hangover it left behind.
