Norma, a pinnacle of Bel Canto
We have before us a pinnacle of bel canto. None of Bellini’s characters has the dramatic force of Norma, elevated to the eternity of the lyric genre by arias such as Casta Diva, her supplication to the moon. This female role is subject to savage contradictions, which combines very disparate facets: priestess, lover, mother and vengeful rival due to her unrequited love for the Roman proconsul Pollio. The Italian composer, with help of a libretto by Felice Romani, combines Greek tragedy, Celtic nature cult and the remorse of Shakespeare’s Lady Macbeth. Lorenzo Amato makes exciting use of this collage of references with spectacular visual projections, stark realism and monumental scenography. The accomplices in artistic direction for the Teatro San Carlo in Naples are once more the history-making combination of Ezio Frigerio (stage design) and Franca Squarciapino (costumes), the leading players in our lyric season, during which they also have collaborated in The Marriage of Figaro. Andrés Salado conducts the pit orchestra.
