The Magic Flute is one of the most well-known and performed of W. A. Mozart’s works. It tells the story of a comical fairytale that is full of philosophical references. The stage director, Jorinde Keesmaat, has chosen a more modern stage design, with this production of The Magic Flute appearing more as a piece of contemporary theatre, without all of the romantic airs and graces of the original period.
Pamina, the Queen of the Night's daughter, is kidnapped by Sarastro. Prince Tamino, who is captivated by her beauty, attempts to rescue her. But it’s not quite so easy. In his effort to free her, he enlists the help of Papageno, a bird-catcher, and, of course, a magic flute, which changes the mood of whoever hears it.
A German-language opera in two acts by W. A. Mozart, with a libretto by Emanuel Schikaneder, and based partly on Lulu, oder die Zauberflöte, by A. J. Liebeskind, and partly on Jean Terrasson's novel Sethos. It is formally known as a singspiel, a popular type of German opera in which the singing is interspersed with spoken dialogue. The opera premiered in Vienna at the Theater auf der Wieden on 30 September 1791, just two months before the death of Mozart, who conducted it himself. Its first performance in Spain took place at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona on 15 January 1925.
