Melodrama in three acts, using the libretto by Antonio Somma, which was based on the libretto by Eugène Scribe titled Gustave III ou Le bal masqué.
Conspiracies, entanglements, romance and superstitions are weaved throughout this opera by Verdi, which was first premiered in the Teatro Apollo di Roma on the 17th of February 1859. It was initially inspired by the events surrounding the assassination of King Gustaf III of Sweden in 1792. Papal censors in Austrian-occupied Rome took a dim view of a royal assassination being staged on stage. They finally moved the story to colonial Boston.
Critical edition of the score by Ilaria Narici; The University of Chicago Press, Chicago; and Casa Ricordi, Milan.
A co-production with the Auditorio de Tenerife and the Teatro Regio di Parma.
