Him and her. They loved each other, and abandoned each other. They acted as everyone does: they married, made a home together, and then, all of a sudden, the terrible force of miscommunication distanced them. They arrived in this city to accomplish the last step of their separation: the divorce trial. They still don’t know what happened to them. They came separately, each one on their own way, to meet for a last time, not willing to do it. 

She seemed freer than him, more capable of forgetting her afflictions, of forgetting the hell they lived, their reciprocal attacks. But she cannot forget the essential. She had clearly discovered that lovers who promise a life-long affection are doomed to disaster. 

In his case, suffering is still alive. He fights. He wants to strip this sorrow away from his life. He still believes in eternal happiness. He exposes himself to grief. She knows that. She is also aware that he can be cruel even without her.
