This world-known text is a first-person account of the Emperor born in Spain. A theatre show that performs at the same time an exciting Romans film and the intimate account of a man in a dialogue with his history, with History.

Memorias de Adriano is based on Marguerite Yourcenar’s namesake novel. In literary terms, it is a fake autobiography. In theatre terms, it is thus a fake personification: Adriano does not live during the 2nd century even if he remembers it. This superposition of different scenes forms the universe of this setting. With a language full of lyricism and an admiration for Hellenism, Yourcenar recreates the figure of a ruler so wise and magnificent, as blind and contradictory. Both profiles are solitary. Taking this topic as the backbone of the show, the director Beatriz Jaén has created a space where the echoes of that solitude resonate in present affairs such as power, politics, and the creation of a public image.

Lluís Homar is Adriano; Adriano is also Lluís Homar: playing the role of himself in many circumstances, constant seeker of philosophical answers, and spiritual traveler. His voice, sometimes secret and evident at other times, guides us through this common experience: the pilgrimage of being. Surrounded by an entourage that takes care of him at the same time that apprehends him, Adriano will compose the legendary discourse where he bequeaths his power to Marco Aurelio. His memory will become the result of his Empire, but also the confession of a man who has known the limits of human experience.
