Cervantes saves Tirant lo Blanc from the stake and Don Quixote claims that it is "the best book in the world". Dámaso Alonso considers it to be the first modern novel in Europe. The Nobel Prize winner Mario Vargas Llosa lavished praise on this complete work, the pinnacle of the Valencian Golden Age, written by Joanot Martorell when Valencia was the epicentre of cultural and humanistic activity in the Mediterranean. While men play politics and win wars, women try to circumvent the sexual repression imposed by Christian morality and lineage. With great irony, Joanot Martorell moves his protagonist, Tirant lo Blanc, between these two worlds, filling his body and soul with wounds. These are the wounds of war and the wounds, perhaps more painful, of love.

Co-produced by the Institut Valencià de Cultura and the Compañía Nacional de Teatro Clásico
