The extreme romanticism of Wherter
It is a luxury to have on our program Graham Vick, one of the most prestigious international directors of today’s lyrical universe. His impressive version of Werther, which come to us from Lisbon’s Teatro São Carlos, underscores certain features of his artistic brilliance: a heightened sense of the spectacular, the interpretive subtlety that he commands of the singers, his constant experimentation with the great works of the opera repertoire and the rigorous respect for the original essentials shaped by its authors. The opera of Jules Massenet, which is being performed at Teatre Principal for the first time, encompasses with its delicate harmonies the struggles of the young Werther, a character illuminated by Goethe as paradigm of extreme Romanticism. The director Cristóbal Soler leads a compact cast including figures such as Giusepe Filianoti, Monica Bacelli, Joan Martín Royo, Tomeu Bibiloni and Mikeldi Atxalandabaso. Sensuality, fatalism, painful love, dilemmas of consciousness, duels between reason and the heart… Welcome to this cocktail mixed out of passion and torment.
