A new production by the Centro Dramático Nacional of one of Federico García Lorca’s most celebrated titles. It is directed by Alfredo Sanzol, who is currently experiencing a brilliant moment in his career. Sanzol himself explains it: “La casa de Bernarda Alba could be told from Bernarda’s point of view as the story of a woman who wished the best for her daughters. A pragmatic, rational mother who knew well the world that surrounded her and who did not hesitate to use all her energy to restrain her anarchical sexual instincts. A woman who is profoundly conscious of the harsh social norms and of the dogmatic judgment of her neighbors. From Adela’s perspective, La casa de Bernarda Alba can be interpreted as a nightmare where a paranoid, dehumanized mother without any trace of empathy shuts her daughters up during eight years of mourning, which puts her lives at risk. People is often on Adela’s side; but how is it possible given that the sexist violence suffered by the women at Bernarda’s house is equal to the sexist violence suffered by women nowadays? How possible is it that we all live in a house with more Bernardas and Bernardos than we thought?
